GM once again leads the world in auto sales

General Motors and its partners sold 9 million vehicles around the globe in 2011, the company announced Thursday, allowing it to reclaim the title of world’s top-selling automaker.Toyota had snatched the crown from General Motors in 2008, as the American automaker nearly crumbled under the weight of its debts and as U.S. auto sales plummeted with the recession.

The 2011 sales figure reflects the dramatic turnaround that began when the company filed for bankruptcy less than three years ago and, according to analysts, stems from the popularity of its latest vehicles.

GM has “demonstrated the ability to introduce competitive products and do it consistently,” said Jeremy Anwyl of the automotive Web site Edmunds.com.

Overall, the U.S. auto industry, which had seemed to be on the brink of collapse at the onset of the recession, has strengthened.

In the darkest days, as the country slipped into economic crisis, even President-elect Barack Obama reportedly asked his advisers on the U.S. auto industry, “Why can’t they make a Corolla?” according to a book by Steve Rattner, Obama’s former auto czar.

But since their government rescues, General Motors and Chrysler have both far exceeded analysts’ expectations for profit and sales. And at Ford, U.S. sales exceeded 2 million in 2011 for the first year since 2007.

GM has even come up with an answer to the Corolla challenge. Today, the company’s best-selling vehicle globally is the Cruze, a compact car introduced last year that has competed well against Toyota’s stalwart.

“We set out to build a better car than the Corolla, and we did,” said James Cain, a GM spokesman. “The Chevy Cruze was the best-selling compact car in the U.S. last year.”

Even with GM’s sales success, however, the United States has still not been fully repaid the $50 billion it invested directly into the company to rescue it.

So far, GM has returned $23 billion, and the government still owns about one-third of the company’s common stock. For the government to recover its full $50 billion investment, its General Motors stock would have to rise to about $54 per share. It is currently selling for about $25.

This year’s GM sales results also underscore the growing importance of the Chinese market.

Of its 9 million in global sales, GM and its joint ventures sold a record 2,547,171 vehicles in China in 2011.

The company’s next-best-selling car, after the Cruze, is one that most Americans likely have never heard of: the Sunshine. An inexpensive and spare-looking minivan, the Sunshine is sold in China and manufactured by a joint-venture company called SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile.

Because a significant share of GM’s 9 million in global sales came from its Chinese joint ventures and not wholly owned subsidiaries, some analysts have questioned how meaningful the figure is.

But GM also benefited this year because of a spate of misfortunes for Toyota.

Toyota hasn’t reported full-year results, but its sales have been hampered by the earthquake in Japan and floods in Thailand. Company officials have estimated that 2011 sales decreased to 7.9 million.

Volkswagen says it sold a record 8.2 million cars and light trucks last year, a 14 percent rise over 2010. Through Porsche and another company in which Volkswagen owns a more than 50 percent stake, the German automaker sold 240,000 more, an official said.

Volkswagen has also announced its intention to become the world’s largest automaker by 2018.

“It’s going to be harder for [GM] to claim the top spot in 2012,” Anwyl said. “This year, they had a tail wind.”

Auto Sales Surge in November

Major U.S. automakers reported significant sales growth last month, marking the largest gains in over two years and boosting the prospects for strong year-end performance through the holiday season.

United States car manufacturers posted major sales increases in November, with buyers purchasing new vehicles at the fastest rate since the “cash for clunkers” program in August 2009. Lower fuel costs, rising consumer confidence, the need to replacing aging cars and the availability of attractive deals all contributed to the November boost.

“With analysts projecting that December will be even better, the industry is closing the year strong despite continued sluggishness in the nation’s economy,” the New York Times notes. “Consumers and businesses are finding they can no longer put off replacing their vehicles, which are now an average of almost 11 years old, a record.”

According to automotive-industry tracking firm Autodata, U.S. light vehicle sales — including passenger cars and light trucks — rose to 994,721 in November, a 13.9 percent increase over November 2010. Sales totaled 11.5 million units through the first 11 months of the year, 10.4 percent more than in the same period last year.

Moreover, the industry’s annualized selling rate (seasonally adjusted) climbed to 13.63 million vehicles in November, the highest level in more than two years.

The largest gains last month were by Chrysler Group LLC, which last week reported a sales total of 107,172, a 45 percent increase over the same month in 2010 and the sixth consecutive month of sales gains exceeding 20 percent. So far this year, Chrysler has sold 1.23 million vehicles, up 25 percent over the same period last year.

“November was another huge month for the Chrysler Group and our highest year-over-year sales gain of 2011,” Reid Bigland, president and CEO of the Dodge brand and head of Chrysler’s U.S. sales, said in an announcement of the results.

Meanwhile, Ford Motor Co. sold 166,865 vehicles in November, a 13 percent increase over November 2010. Ford’s November U.S. retail sales also increased 20 percent over the prior year, the company’s largest year-over-year gain in nine months. So far this year, Ford has sold 1.94 million units, 11.1 percent more than in the same period in 2010. The company plans to increase vehicle production in the first quarter of 2012 by 3 percent.

“[C]onsumers continue to value fuel economy — no matter what size or kind of vehicle best meets their needs,” Ken Czubay, vice president of U.S. marketing, sales and service at Ford, said in a release of the findings. “Most Ford products deliver best-in-class fuel economy and provide customers an opportunity to choose what best works for them — EcoBoost technology or electrified vehicles.”

General Motors Co. last week reported November sales of 180,402 vehicles, up 7 percent from November 2010. Retail sales were up 15 percent year-over-year, while fleet sales fell 14 percent. So far this year, GM has sold 2.27 million vehicles, 14 percent more than during the same period last year.

“We are seeing a broad spectrum of customers return to the market,” Don Johnson, GM’s vice president of U.S. sales operations, said in an announcement. “Truck sales showed a very solid increase, as we expected, but the momentum building behind our most fuel-efficient vehicles was even stronger.”

The strong sales performance among U.S. automakers last month indicates that the automotive industry has rebounded from its recessionary low and the economy as a whole is benefiting from increased consumer demand and spending.

“Excluding the Clunkers spike, it was the best month since before the financial market meltdown in September 2008. Industry experts said buyers appear ready to finally look past the various uncertainties in the general economy and start buying cars once again,” CNN.com reports. “November sales gains were led by domestic automakers, which are in position to all gain market share in the same year for the first time in decades.”

Sales gains weren’t confined to domestic car manufacturers, as Toyota Motor Co., the world’s largest automaker, also posted growth in November, with U.S. sales rising to 137,960 units, a 6.7 percent unadjusted increase over November 2010. So far this year, Toyota has sold 1.47 million vehicles, down 7.5 percent from the same period in 2010.

“A better selection of cars at Toyota showrooms also brought more shoppers back into the market. Many buyers spent the summer waiting for those inventories to improve after the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan squeezed supplies,” the Associated Press reports.

With November sales of 85,182 units in the U.S., Nissan Motor Co. last week reported a 19.4 percent year-over-year increase. Meanwhile, Honda Motor Co. sales fell to 83,925, a 10.1 decrease, largely due to flooding in Thailand that disrupted the company’s North American production rates.

New Zeigler car dealership is a reason to applaud, local economic developer says

KALAMAZOO— Saying it was a “no-brainer” to maintain the headquarters of the Harold Zeigler Auto Group in Kalamazoo — and to grow jobs and the business here — company President Aaron Zeigler dedicated the group’s new 24,000-square-foot Chrysler, Dodge Ram dealership Thursday evening.

“We’ve been very, very passionate about being in Kalamazoo and creating good-paying jobs in Kalamazoo,” he told more than 300 business leaders, civic leaders, customers and others, before he, members of his family, John Plecha, Great Lakes Business Center Director for Chrysler, and others cut a ceremonial ribbon to open the facility.

Ron Kitchens, chief executive officer of regional economic development organization Southwest Michigan First, said the event was an occasion to applaud.

“We’re here to remind ourselves that communities have to stop and applaud,” Kitchens said, referring to businesses that are in the process of growing jobs here and developing properties here.

Likening the business world to a football game, he said, “We don’t wait until the end of the game to applaud the players. … It is critically important that we stop and say, ‘Thank you,’ and applaud those in our community who continue to invest here, develop here, grow jobs here.”

He said the multimillion-dollar expansion that the Zeigler Auto Group announced in November 2010 and has underway is more validation that the economy is coming back and that the Kalamazoo community is doing well.

Aaron Zeigler said the business that his father Harold started 36 years ago, and for which he built his headquarters building here in 1988, has basically tripled in size over the past eight years. He has repeatedly declined to say how much the business is spending to expand here and in suburban Chicago.

The business has grown from 32 franchises in 11 locations last year to 38 franchises in 14 locations currently, and its staff has grown from 650 to about 825. That includes its local staff, which has grown from about 275 people to 375, with another 25 left to hire here.

The new, two-story Zeigler Chrysler Dodge Ram dealership features state-of-the-art parts and service departments, a multi-media conference room, a fitness center for employees, and upscale waiting lounges with a fireplace for adults and a Wii game system for their children.

Those in attendance included many of the contractors involved in the building project, as well as Michigan Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker, R-Antwerp Township, former Michigan Speaker of the House Chuck Periconne, and various Kalamazoo and Portage city commissioners.

Most automakers posted big sales gains in Northeast Ohio in June

Auto sales boomed in Northeast Ohio in June with General Motors, Chrysler and Hyundai all posting massive gains, but Japanese automakers Honda and Toyota posted sales declines.

As it has been for most of the past two years, Hyundai was the fastest-growing brand in the region with sales up 49 percent. Chrysler was close behind with a 48 percent jump.

General Motors maintained its sales lead in the region, selling 4,093 cars and trucks, 37 percent more than it did in June of 2010. Hyundai sold 2,606 vehicles last month while Chrysler sold 1,852.

“Growth in sales of new cars and trucks slowed slightly due to tighter inventories of many popular vehicles,” Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association President Lou Vitantonio said in a written statement. “Sales are expected to pick back up in July, as dealer inventories return to normal. We expect this trend to continue through August. Credit is more available, and if fuel prices continue to fall, it will only help consumer confidence.”

In May, sales in Northeast Ohio jumped about 27 percent. Last month sales climbed 14 percent.

Ford Motor Co., the automaker that dominated Northeast Ohio sales last year, grew 9 percent in June. Though sales have been strong this year, sharper gains at GM have pushed Ford back to the No. 2 position.

9778000 large Most automakers posted big sales gains in Northeast Ohio in June

Toyota and Honda continued to lag that growth as both companies deal with shortages of vehicles and parts made in Japan in the wake of natural disasters in that country. Honda expects its production to be back to normal by the end of August. Toyota has targeted September or October for a return to normal operations.

Toyota took the biggest hit with sales down 29 percent. Honda sales were off only 4 percent.

Sales of large commercial trucks were much stronger than the rest of the market. At Freightliner, sales more than tripled to 41 vehicles from 13 a year ago. The commercial market as a whole was up 65 percent to 109 vehicles. With such small numbers, a few extra vehicles can lead to huge percentage gains, but sales have increased steadily in the commercial market all year.

Chrysler to Set Up 200 Fiat Dealerships

Chrysler said Tuesday that it planned to set up about 200 outlets by the end of the year to sell the Fiat 500, an Italian designed subcompact. The dealerships will be run by existing Chrysler dealers and in many cases located on the same property, but they will have separate showrooms and employees.

The strategy runs counter to a general trend of consolidating multiple brands into one showroom. It also requires dealers to commit significant resources to a lineup that initially has a single model. A convertible, the 500 Cabrio, is scheduled to arrive in 2011, followed by a battery-powered 500 in 2012, but Chrysler has not revealed plans to expand Fiat beyond that.

BMW used a similar approach to successfully reintroduce its Mini brand to the United States nearly a decade ago, requiring dealers to build auxiliary showrooms to sell the Mini Cooper. But investing in an expansion for what analysts consider to be a niche model, at a time when auto sales are depressed and many dealers are struggling, is a gamble.

“If I were a dealer, I would be somewhat reluctant to make that investment,” said Erich Merkle, an automotive analyst and president of Autoconomy.com in Grand Rapids, Mich. “You have to go and build a new facility to sell a brand that really is going to take a considerable amount of time to get any kind of volume.”

A Chrysler spokesman, Ralph Kisiel, said the company intended to have Fiat dealerships in 125 markets in about 41 states. He said most would be concentrated in metropolitan areas where small cars were already popular and where demand was expected to increase.

Executives sent letters this week to all 2,320 Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram dealers inviting them to apply for a Fiat franchise. Fewer than 10 percent will be selected, and the locations will be announced in September, Chrysler said.

“We want our best performing dealers to get these franchises,” Mr. Kisiel said, adding that Chrysler has focused on “markets that have a high number of small-car registrations.”

Interest in the 500 among Chrysler dealers has been high, and given the small number of outlets being selected, Mr. Merkle said he expected the company would receive more than enough bids, despite the requirements.

Among those planning to apply is Alfredo Gulla, a Chrysler dealer in suburban Westchester County, N.Y. Mr. Gulla opened a Fiat dealership at age 19 and sold that brand for more than two decades until Fiat abandoned the United States in 1984 amid widespread quality problems.

“All these years I’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting” for Fiat to return, said Mr. Gulla, the owner of Larchmont Chrysler Jeep Dodge. “It’s an emotional situation as well as an economic one.”

Mr. Kisiel said Chrysler was confident that dealers would get a good return on their investment and thought that separating Fiat from Chrysler’s four other brands would help the 500 attract customers who have not bought Chrysler products before.

“You can’t expect a Ram salesman to be trying to sell a Fiat 500,” Mr. Kisiel said, referring to Chrysler’s Ram brand of pickup trucks.

The Fiat 500 is a major piece of Chrysler’s efforts to diversify a lineup that has relied heavily on trucks and sport utility vehicles, hurting sales as American consumers began seeking more fuel-efficient alternatives. The company plans to build more than 100,000 of the vehicles a year at a plant in Mexico, sending half to the United States and half to South America.

Access to a dealership network in the United States was a major reason that the Italian carmaker’s chief executive, Sergio Marchionne, pursued a takeover of Chrysler. The 500 fills a hole in Chrysler’s lineup, but also gives Fiat a quick way to re-establish itself in the United States.

“Everybody wants something new, so it will create a lot of excitement, and we’ll probably sell a lot of them at the beginning,” said Frank Mancari, the owner of Mancari Chrysler Jeep Dodge in Oak Lawn, Ill., who hopes to get a Fiat franchise. “It’s Mr. Marchionne’s baby; he’ll make it work whatever it takes. If they price it right and the quality’s there, they’ll have a winner.”
