Chrysler, VW Sales Soar 40% in January; GM Sales Fall 6%
3:40 PM New York – Auto sales in January surged at the fastest pace in nearly four years and Chrysler Group and Volkswagen AG accelerated sales growth at 40% in the month. General Motors was the lone maker to report a decline in sales. Industry sales were the largest since May 2008.
Auto sales in January rose 11% from a year ago and as buyers stepped and Japanese makers faced fewer difficulties in sourcing products from Asia.
Sales in the month accelerated at the fastest pace in the last four years and automakers released plans for auto expansions and Japanese automakers sourced more vehicles from Asia.
Seasonally adjusted annual sales rate in January increased to 14.18 million from 13.56 million in December and from 12.69 million in the month a year ago.
The monthly data are released by the industry research organization Autodata Corp based in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey.
In January, total light vehicle sales increased 11.4% to 913,287 from 819,795 from a year ago period. Passenger car sales in the month gained 19.9% to 468,321 from 390,722 and light truck sales increased 3.7% to 444,966 from 429,073.
For the month Chrysler led the sale with a rise of 44.3%, Mercedes Benz sales soared 23.2% and Nissan sales added 10.4%.
Chrysler Sales Surge 44%, GM Sales Fall 6%
General Motors (GM) sales decreased 6.1% to 167,962 units from 178,896. Sales of light vehicles decreased 11.4% to 99,248 from 112,018 and car sales rose 2.7% to 68,714.
Ford Motor Company (F) sales increased 7.3% to 136,294 units from 126,981 vehicles a year ago. Truck sales in the month increased 9.7% to 94,409 from 86,076.
Sales of passenger cars increased 2.4% to 41,885 units compared to 40,905 a year ago. In January, sales of the Fusion decreased 5.1% to total of 13,614 compared to 14,346 a year ago.
Chrysler LLC sales in the month soared 44.3% to 101,149 from 70,118 vehicles a year ago. Sales of cars surged 136.5% to 28,832 and light truck sales increased 24.8% to 72,317.
Toyota Sales Rise 7.5%
Toyota Motor sales in January rose 7.5% to 124,540 from 115,856 in the same period a year earlier. Sales of the cars increased 19.1% to 73,671 from 61,831 and light trucks decreased 5.8% to 50,869 from 54,025 a year ago.
Honda sales in the month increased 8.8% to 83,009 from 76,269 a year ago. Sales of cars in the month increased 16.3% to 44,818 from 38,546 and sales of the light trucks rose 1.2% to 38,191 compared to 37,723 a year ago.
Nissan Motor Company vehicles sales in the month increased 10.4% to 79,313 from 71,847 a year ago. January cars sales rose 5.8% and sales of the light trucks increased 19.9% from a year ago.
Mitsubishi Motors vehicles January sales decreased 17.6% to 4,711 compared with 5,714 units in the month of last year.
Sales for Mazda surged 68.2% to 23,996 compared to 14,267 in the year ago and Isuzu Motors failed to sell a single vehicle compared to none in the month a year ago.
Daimler Sales Gain 23%, VW Sales Soar 40%
Volkswagen Group of America Inc sales soared 39.5% to 36,709 from 26,311 a year ago. Vehicles branded Audi sales increased 19.7%, Volkswagen surged 47.9% and Bentley sales soared to 43.9%.
Mercedes-Benz USA unit sales in the month gained 23.2% to 21,731 from a year ago. Sale of the Maybach brand was flat at 5 and sales of the Smart branded vehicles surged 38.5% to 496 from 358 a year ago.
BMW of North America Inc sales in the month increased 5.8% to 19,769 compared to a year ago month to 18,693. Rolls Royce sales dropped 18.9% to 30 from 37 a year ago.
Jaguar Land Rover N.A. LLC unit sales increased 30.7% to 4,190 from 3,206 a year ago. Sales of Land Rover soared 41.1% to 3,205 from 2,271.
Porsche Cars N.A. Inc sales in the month gained 6.3% to 2,550 from 2,400 a year ago.
Sales of cars in the month increased 15.1% to 1,557 from 1,353 and sales of the light trucks decreased 5.2% to 993 compared to 1,047 a year ago.
