Chrysler Group LLC Launches Diversified Certified Program



First of its kind in the industry

Gives dealers option to sell variety of certified pre-owned makes and models

Warranty backed by Chrysler Group LLC

Chrysler Group LLC today announced the launch of Diversified Certified, a new program that enables Chrysler Group dealers to certify and sell competitive-make, pre-owned vehicles backed with a Chrysler Group warranty.

The 140 FIAT studios now open in the United States are the first to launch the Diversified Certified program. Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and Ram Truck dealers will join the program in about 60 days.

Consumers looking for the security that a certified pre-owned vehicle offers now need only look to Chrysler Group dealerships and FIAT studios for the widest selection and one-stop shopping.

“Today is a new chapter for certified pre-owned vehicles,” said Eric Swanson, Head of Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles at Chrysler Group LLC. “Just because we didn’t build the vehicle, doesn’t mean we won’t back it with a Chrysler Group warranty. Of course, we always want our customers to visit our dealers and purchase a new or certified pre-owned Chrysler Group model, but now we have given them another option to consider.”

All competitive-make pre-owned vehicles will be subjected to a thorough certification process and come with a 5-Year/60,000-Mile Maximum Care (full mechanical) Warranty from original in-service date, as well as Certified Pre-Owned program benefits such as towing, roadside assistance and more.

The timing is perfect for this Diversified Certified program, said dealer Gary Brown, of Brown’s FIAT and Brown’s Jeep Chrysler Dodge, both in Patchogue, N.Y. With Chrysler Group sales up 26 percent in 2011, and up 42 percent so far this year, “we have never seen so many conquest opportunities,” Brown said.

“Diversified Certified will give our used car team a great opportunity to bolster and sell our pre-owned inventory,” Brown said. “We are really excited about it.”

Vehicles eligible for the Diversified Certified program will have less than 48,000 miles on the odometer and will be a 2008 model or newer.

Only 18 months after the Chrysler Group began production of its new Pentastar V6 at its Trenton Engine Assembly Plant in Michigan, the company hit its first important milestone with the manufacturing of the one-millionth unit. The V6 is also produced at Chrysler’s plant in Saltillo, Mexico.

The Detroit firm’s all-aluminum 3.6-liter V6 engine made its debut on the 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee but has since found its way under the hood of many more models.

These include the Chrysler 200, 300 and Town and Country, plus the Dodge Avenger, Challenger, Charger, Durango, Journey and Caravan, and more recently the 2012 Jeep Wrangler.

“To build one million of anything, and in an impressively short amount of time, is a significant achievement. But to do it with such a high degree of quality is a testament to our skilled and dedicated workforce at both Trenton South and Saltillo engine plants,” said Brian Harlow, head of Chrysler’s Powertrain Manufacturing division.

Over the past year and a half, the 3.6-liter unit has replaced six legacy V6 engines ranging from 2.7-liter up to 4.0-liters in the Chrysler Group LLC product portfolio. It is offered with the Chrysler Group’s new 8-speed automatic transmission.

Compared to its predecessors, it’s not only more powerful and fuel efficient but also less complicated in its construction as the engine components were reduced from 189 parts to just 32.

Auto Sales Surge in November



Major U.S. automakers reported significant sales growth last month, marking the largest gains in over two years and boosting the prospects for strong year-end performance through the holiday season.

United States car manufacturers posted major sales increases in November, with buyers purchasing new vehicles at the fastest rate since the “cash for clunkers” program in August 2009. Lower fuel costs, rising consumer confidence, the need to replacing aging cars and the availability of attractive deals all contributed to the November boost.

“With analysts projecting that December will be even better, the industry is closing the year strong despite continued sluggishness in the nation’s economy,” the New York Times notes. “Consumers and businesses are finding they can no longer put off replacing their vehicles, which are now an average of almost 11 years old, a record.”

According to automotive-industry tracking firm Autodata, U.S. light vehicle sales — including passenger cars and light trucks — rose to 994,721 in November, a 13.9 percent increase over November 2010. Sales totaled 11.5 million units through the first 11 months of the year, 10.4 percent more than in the same period last year.

Moreover, the industry’s annualized selling rate (seasonally adjusted) climbed to 13.63 million vehicles in November, the highest level in more than two years.

The largest gains last month were by Chrysler Group LLC, which last week reported a sales total of 107,172, a 45 percent increase over the same month in 2010 and the sixth consecutive month of sales gains exceeding 20 percent. So far this year, Chrysler has sold 1.23 million vehicles, up 25 percent over the same period last year.

“November was another huge month for the Chrysler Group and our highest year-over-year sales gain of 2011,” Reid Bigland, president and CEO of the Dodge brand and head of Chrysler’s U.S. sales, said in an announcement of the results.

Meanwhile, Ford Motor Co. sold 166,865 vehicles in November, a 13 percent increase over November 2010. Ford’s November U.S. retail sales also increased 20 percent over the prior year, the company’s largest year-over-year gain in nine months. So far this year, Ford has sold 1.94 million units, 11.1 percent more than in the same period in 2010. The company plans to increase vehicle production in the first quarter of 2012 by 3 percent.

“[C]onsumers continue to value fuel economy — no matter what size or kind of vehicle best meets their needs,” Ken Czubay, vice president of U.S. marketing, sales and service at Ford, said in a release of the findings. “Most Ford products deliver best-in-class fuel economy and provide customers an opportunity to choose what best works for them — EcoBoost technology or electrified vehicles.”

General Motors Co. last week reported November sales of 180,402 vehicles, up 7 percent from November 2010. Retail sales were up 15 percent year-over-year, while fleet sales fell 14 percent. So far this year, GM has sold 2.27 million vehicles, 14 percent more than during the same period last year.

“We are seeing a broad spectrum of customers return to the market,” Don Johnson, GM’s vice president of U.S. sales operations, said in an announcement. “Truck sales showed a very solid increase, as we expected, but the momentum building behind our most fuel-efficient vehicles was even stronger.”

The strong sales performance among U.S. automakers last month indicates that the automotive industry has rebounded from its recessionary low and the economy as a whole is benefiting from increased consumer demand and spending.

“Excluding the Clunkers spike, it was the best month since before the financial market meltdown in September 2008. Industry experts said buyers appear ready to finally look past the various uncertainties in the general economy and start buying cars once again,” CNN.com reports. “November sales gains were led by domestic automakers, which are in position to all gain market share in the same year for the first time in decades.”

Sales gains weren’t confined to domestic car manufacturers, as Toyota Motor Co., the world’s largest automaker, also posted growth in November, with U.S. sales rising to 137,960 units, a 6.7 percent unadjusted increase over November 2010. So far this year, Toyota has sold 1.47 million vehicles, down 7.5 percent from the same period in 2010.

“A better selection of cars at Toyota showrooms also brought more shoppers back into the market. Many buyers spent the summer waiting for those inventories to improve after the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan squeezed supplies,” the Associated Press reports.

With November sales of 85,182 units in the U.S., Nissan Motor Co. last week reported a 19.4 percent year-over-year increase. Meanwhile, Honda Motor Co. sales fell to 83,925, a 10.1 decrease, largely due to flooding in Thailand that disrupted the company’s North American production rates.

Chrysler announces ‘No Payment for 90 Days’ program



Chrysler Group LLC announced a new “No Payments for 90 Days” incentive program Wednesday for all 2011 and 2012 Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Ram Truck models, as part of the company’s summer clearance event.

Vehicles purchased through the program must be financed through Ally Financial, and the offer is only available to qualified customers.

The company also announced additional incentives on 2012 model year vehicles, including $500 cash back on a Chrysler 200 sedan, $1,000 on a Jeep Liberty, $500 on a Dodge Avenger or Journey, and up to $1,500 on a Ram pickup.

New deals on 2011 models are being offered, too, including 3-year financing as low as zero percent or $2,000 cash back on a Chrysler 300, 300C or Dodge Charger.

Chrysler could raise interest rate in trade talks



NEW YORK – Potential debt investors in Chrysler Group LLC may push for a higher interest rate on the US automaker’s term loan to better offset business risks, people familiar with the matter said yesterday.

Chrysler’s top executives held a conference call with potential lenders to address key questions about the terms of the $US3.5 billion loan and additional details about the company’s financial metrics, sources said.

It could not be immediately learned what was discussed on Thursday’s call. But investors this week said the current rate may not adequately compensate lenders for the risks involved in investing in the company’s loan.

Investors added that due to the large size of the loan Chrysler may have to raise the interest rate to make the deal more attractive to investors. One investor said the company could lift the interest rate on the loan to as much as 6.5 per cent to make it more attractive.

“You’re paying back government debt and the company will generate negative free cash flow for the next year,” another investor said this week.

The investor added that Chrysler is likely first to pay down the $US4 billion trust note held by the healthcare trust affiliated with the United Auto Workers union, known as the Veba.

Chrysler is seeking the $US3.5 billion term loan as part of a package refinance about $US7.5 billion in government loans made during its historic 2009 bailout.

Chrysler, which is operated by Fiat SpA, declined to comment. Chief executive Sergio Marchionne said he intends to repay the loans from the United States and Canada by the end of June.

Analysts have said that Chrysler’s vehicle lineup remains heavily skewed toward pickup trucks and SUVs at a time when fuel prices are on the rise. The company has few small car offerings now except for the Fiat 500, a new brand whose launch has been beset with delays.

“This looks like a very ambitious refinancing for a company that still has some major challenges in front of it,” Conway Mackenzie consultant Fred Hubacker said.

Another investor who was shown the deal said given the large size of the loan, lenders did not feel pressed to rush in. “Worst case, they can always pick it up in the secondary,” the investor said.

Payback time

Chrysler and its larger US rival General Motors Co took a federal bailout at the height of the financial crisis in 2009 as auto sales collapsed and consumer credit dried up.

Chrysler was saddled with high-interest government loans, which bear interest rates from around 7 to 20 per cent.

The US Treasury took an equity stake in GM, which has halved in GM’s blockbuster initial public offering last year.

Earlier Thursday, sources said the US Treasury would not start selling its remaining stake in GM until August at the earliest, due in part to the stock’s lacklustre share performance.

On May 4, Marchionne met with bankers and other investors to kick off its effort to raise $US6 billion in a term loan and bonds to repay the government debt. The refinancing would put the automaker on a firmer financial footing, ahead of a potential IPO that could come later this year.

The $US3.5 billion term loan is led by Morgan Stanley. Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Citigroup and Goldman Sachs are to the right of Morgan Stanley.

The $US2.5 billion second-line bond deal is led by Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Chrysler also plans to use about $US1.27 billion in cash from Fiat to help repay the loans. Chrysler is also seeking a $US1.5 billion revolving line of credit that will not be used to pay back the government.

Goldman Sachs is Chrysler’s financial adviser.

Morgan Stanley, the lead agent bank on the deal, has been marketing the loan at four percentage points to 4.25 percentage points above Libor with a 1.25 per cent Libor floor, along with a discount of 99 to 99.5 cents on the dollar.

Chrysler Idles Pickup, SUV Factories in June to Conserve Parts From Japan



Chrysler Group LLC, the automaker run by Fiat SpA (F), is pulling ahead summer shutdowns at some factories and canceling overtime at a plant in Mexico to conserve parts from suppliers affected by the March earthquake in Japan.

The automaker, based in Auburn Hills, Michigan, will idle some factories in Ohio and Michigan in June, instead of July, Jodi Tinson, a Chrysler spokeswoman, said today in an e-mail. The factories make pickups and sport-utility vehicles. U.S. automakers typically stop production for a week or two to change tooling before beginning the next model year’s production.

Chrysler’s Toledo North Assembly Plant that builds Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro SUVs in Ohio will shut down during the weeks of June 20 and June 27 instead of during the week of July 11 and July 18, she said. The Toledo Supplier Park that produces Jeep Wranglers will shut down for the week of June 20 instead of the week of July 11, Tinson said.

A factory that makes Ram 1500 and Dakota pickups in Warren, Michigan, will be closed during the weeks of June 20 and June 27 instead of July 11 and July 18, she said.

The assembly plant in Saltillo, Mexico, that makes Ram trucks will eliminate overtime scheduled for May 20, May 27, June 10 and June 24 instead of taking down time during the week of July 11, she said.

The coming Ram Express pickup truck is aimed at young, first-time buyers.

Chrysler Group’s Ram truck brand has settled on a name for the next permutation of its full-size pickup truck. The new version, aimed at first-time buyers, will be called the Ram 1500 Express.

If you guessed the truck would be called the Adventurer you were not alone. The company in February said it was working on a possible new model using that codename. And if you ask me, the name better captures what people love about pickups and what compels young drivers, males in particular, to buy them whether they need them or not.

Ram says the idea behind the Express was to offer a large truck with a V8 engine and enough features to help it avoid the stripped-down-truck characterization. The new truck, which reaches dealerships later in the second quarter of this year, is essentially a replacement for the outgoing mid-size Dakota model the company used to court young buyers for the last two decades.

What Ram and other truck makers have found is that people shopping for pickups generally want a  big vehicle and the rugged, resourceful and macho image that comes with them. Smaller trucks, while more than capable enough to handle most buyers’ requirements, completely lack the feeling of toughness and invulnerability people seem to feel at the wheel of a large truck.

Rivals Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co. have also shifted marketing efforts away from smaller trucks in favor of their more appealing and profitable large models. Ram says the Express, which comes in a regular-cab, short-bed configuration, will start at $23,830 including a $975 destination charge. It is meant in part to undercut similar trucks from Ford and GM.

Now, back to the name. Ram, formerly Dodge, used the “Express” moniker on a 1978 truck called the “Li’l Red Express.” It had bright red paint, a logo with its name on the door and big-rig style vertical exhaust pipes that rose above the passenger cab.

Even as an 11-year-old caught up in the heart of the disco era, I thought the  Express was super-cheesy. Of course, I’m now many years outside the company’s target demographic, and the new truck looks better than the old version. Still, I wish Ram had stuck with “Adventurer.”

Chrysler’s Ram truck unit is planning to roll out a pickup meant to attract first-time buyers with a combination of low prices and stylish touches like 20-inch wheels.

Chrysler’s Ram truck unit says it will soon launch a basic, inexpensive version of its Ram 1500 pickup truck meant to appeal to first-time truck buyers who are looking for a vehicle they can customize and outfit to suit their needs.

The car maker has been developing the new model under the code name Adventurer but hasn’t picked an official name. The new truck uses a formula similar to the 2011 Ram Tradesman, a Ram model aimed at contractors that Chrysler unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show earlier this month. Like the Tradesman, the new truck has a standard Hemi V8 engine with 390 horsepower and a 20-miles-per-gallon fuel economy rating.

Chrysler’s marketing strategy for Ram trucks is part of the company’s plan to catch up with rivals Ford and General Motors, who sell more than twice as many pickups annually. It also reflects a general turn in the U.S. light-truck business away from marketing compact or mid-size pickup trucks to entry-level buyers.

Dodge was a pioneer in mid-size trucks when it rolled out the Dakota two decades ago. Now the Dakota is on its way out. Ford and Chevrolet have also refocused on building lower-priced versions of their big trucks to attract first-time truck buyers. Part of the reason is that these customers, typically young men, do not like the junior, unseasoned or wimpy image that often goes with a “little” truck.

Ram Truck executives had planned to introduce the new Ram 1500 model later this year. But they say the enthusiastic consumer response to the Tradesman convinced them to accelerate launch plans and start taking orders – with dealers still using the Adventurer code name. Pricing will starts $23,830, including $975 destination charge. It will arrive in second quarter.

Diesel Technology Forum Welcomes Chrysler Group LLC as its Newest Member



Chrysler Group LLC has become the newest member of the Diesel Technology Forum (DTF), the nation’s leading advocate for the use of clean diesel technologies. “Chrysler features some of the finest and most efficient diesel trucks on the market and its alliance with the Fiat Group makes it one of the world’s most diverse producers of clean diesel automobiles,” said Allen Schaeffer, the Executive Director of Forum.
