Chrysler Idles Pickup, SUV Factories in June to Conserve Parts From Japan

Chrysler Group LLC, the automaker run by Fiat SpA (F), is pulling ahead summer shutdowns at some factories and canceling overtime at a plant in Mexico to conserve parts from suppliers affected by the March earthquake in Japan.

The automaker, based in Auburn Hills, Michigan, will idle some factories in Ohio and Michigan in June, instead of July, Jodi Tinson, a Chrysler spokeswoman, said today in an e-mail. The factories make pickups and sport-utility vehicles. U.S. automakers typically stop production for a week or two to change tooling before beginning the next model year’s production.

Chrysler’s Toledo North Assembly Plant that builds Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro SUVs in Ohio will shut down during the weeks of June 20 and June 27 instead of during the week of July 11 and July 18, she said. The Toledo Supplier Park that produces Jeep Wranglers will shut down for the week of June 20 instead of the week of July 11, Tinson said.

A factory that makes Ram 1500 and Dakota pickups in Warren, Michigan, will be closed during the weeks of June 20 and June 27 instead of July 11 and July 18, she said.

The assembly plant in Saltillo, Mexico, that makes Ram trucks will eliminate overtime scheduled for May 20, May 27, June 10 and June 24 instead of taking down time during the week of July 11, she said.

Chrysler idles truck and SUV plants due to Japanese earthquake

Chrysler Group has announced that they would be moving planned summer shutdowns forward at several facilities to conserve parts that could be in short supply, stemming from problems caused by the Japanese earthquake on March 11th.

Chrysler has not stated exactly what parts they are trying to conserve but the company plans to idle plants in Michigan, Ohio and Mexico – all of which produce trucks, SUVs or components for one of the two. These plants all had planned routine downtime later this summer for maintenance, retooling and other tasks required before getting into the next model year production but the automaker has opted to idle these plants earlier than originally expected.

In Michigan, the Warren Truck production facility that builds Ram 1500 and Dakota pickups will be closed the weeks of June 20-24 and June 27-July 1. The original dates for the scheduled downtime at the Warren plant were the weeks of July 11-15 and July 18-22. The production of the Dakota is planned to wind down at the end of this year and while the Ram management has talked about a new small truck that will differentiate itself more from the Ram Truck lineup, no information on this new pickup has been offered.

Next, in Ohio Chrysler will stop production at the Toledo North Assembly Plant for two weeks and the Toledo Supplier Park for one week. Toledo North builds the Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro sport utility vehicles and like the scheduled downtime for the Warren, Michigan plant, Toledo North will be shuttered from June 20-24 and June 27-July 1 rather than the weeks of July 11-15 and July 18-22. The Toledo Supplier Park plant builds the Jeep Wrangler and the downtime for that group will take place on June 20-24 rather than July 11-15.

Finally, the Mexican production facility responsible for Ram Trucks has cancelled scheduled overtime for May 20, May 27, June 10, and June 24 rather than having a week of downtime beginning on July 11th.

Banking on Jeep

As Chrysler Group LLC continues its arduous emergence from last year’s bankruptcy, the U.S. automaker is basing much of its strategy for recovery on its Jeep brand. The success of these plans will greatly affect Toledo’s economy, because Jeep builds several of its best-selling models here. So far, the effort appears to be paying off.

Chrysler executives said this week that sales outside the United States of the made-in-Toledo Jeep Wrangler sport utility vehicle have doubled in the past year. That’s a key element of Chrysler’s plan to triple overall exports of its cars and trucks by 2014. Foreign sales of the Jeep Liberty, also made here, are holding their own, Chrysler says.

Chrysler’s affiliation with the Italian automaker Fiat SpA, part of its postbankruptcy reinvention, offers new retail opportunities worldwide. The automaker has upgraded the Wrangler for the 2011 model year – its interior, electronics, removable hardtop roof – to help prepare for the sales initiative.

This month, Chrysler dropped another tantalizing hint. The company reintroduced to its dealers, to what executives called an “overwhelming response,” a celebrated concept vehicle: a Jeep-branded, midsized pickup based on the Wrangler. Chrysler’s Toledo Assembly complex would seem the ideal place to build the truck.

Although Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne told dealers he plans to produce the pickup, the company isn’t talking about timing or numbers. Still, the signs are promising.

A concept version of the vehicle has been kicking around for five years. Its elements are evident in the four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, a big seller for the brand.

Should Chrysler green-light the truck’s manufacture, that could mean more work and expanded capacity for Toledo Assembly. The four-year-old plant and its United Auto Workers-represented employees have demonstrated their high productivity and commitment to quality.

Greater attention to Toledo would be an appropriate reflection of Chrysler’s comeback, this area’s role in the automaker’s heritage, and its contribution to the company’s survival. It also would highlight Chrysler’s continued importance to a domestic auto industry that itself is feeling its way toward recovery from its collapse just two years ago.

Toledoans must not succumb to the dangerous notion that the local economy will do just fine once U.S. automakers resume their previous dominance. The days of the “Big Three” are gone for good, and northwest Ohio must do much more to diversify its economy and reduce its previous overreliance on the production of autos and auto parts.

Still, a broader role for Toledo in Chrysler’s export and new-product plans would deliver a sizable jolt to local economic growth and job creation. How about it, Mr. Marchionne?

Chrysler Recalls 22,300 Trucks and S.U.V.’s

Chrysler is recalling about 22,300 of its 2010 trucks and sport utilities due to a brake problem, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Chrysler said the vehicles are some 2010 Ram 1500 pickups, the Dodge Nitro, Jeep Liberty and Jeep Wrangler.

The automaker told the safety agency it was recalling the vehicles because an improperly formed part could allow brake fluid to leak.

In other actions:

• Ford is recalling about 33,700 of its 2010 Transit Connect trucks because part of the headliner just above the B pillar (the roof support closest to the driver and front-seat passenger) does not do a good enough job of cushioning an impact. That increases the chance of a head injury in a crash. The defect was discovered by the agency during testing.

• Blue Bird Corporation is recalling about 2,300 of its 2010 and 2011 “D3” All American and 2011 Vision school buses because the cruise control may not disconnect when the brake pedal is depressed.

Last month the company recalled about 5,300 buses in three recalls involving a fire hazard, possible loss of steering and the driver’s seat collapsing.

• Kawasaki is recalling almost 1,200 2010 ZR1000 motorcycles because “under severe riding conditions” the brake hose on the left front may hit the brake rotor. That could cause a leak, reduced braking ability and possibly a crash.

• The agency has upgraded its investigation into a possible safety problem on 2008-9 child restraints made by the Dorel Juvenile Group.

In March, the agency opened a preliminary evaluation of the 2008 Safety 1st Vantage child seat after getting a complaint from an owner who said the front safety harness could slip when it should be locked into place.

Now the agency says it has found reason for concern “based on information provided by Dorel and additional consumer reports on other model Dorel child seats.” Consequently, the agency has started a more serious “engineering analysis.”

The agency said the investigation will “include all child seats manufactured by the Dorel Juvenile Group in model years 2008 and 2009 that were equipped with “center front adjusters.”

Dorel recalled almost four million car seats last January because a restraining strap did not meet safety standards and if “exposed to a significant amount of abrasion” it might not be strong enough to hold the car seat in a crash.
