2012 Laramie is Ram royalty

Guts, glory, the tang of diesel fumes, enough torque to tow medium-sized mountains, a step-in height that just about requires you to go on oxygen, a driver’s seat vista that makes you feel like you’re at the wheel of an open-pit mining truck, mass pushing four American-style tons and enough premium-grade leather to re-upholster a herd of Texas cattle – welcome to the Dodge Ram 2500 Laramie Longhorn Crew Cab 4×4.

ram pickup17wh1 1372316cl 3 2012 Laramie is Ram royalty

Oh, and a price tag on the unit driven of $74,310, the ante for a North American pickup truck, a vehicle most associate with scuffed work boots rather than glove-soft Gucci loafers and the high-falutin’ foreign luxury sedans that more often come to mind when you’re talking that kind of coin.

But this is no ordinary member of the triumvirate of ruling North American pickup truck families – Ford, General Motors and Chrysler – which between them accounted for 244,822 of the 263,269 large pickups sold in Canada last year. The 2500 Laramie Longhorn is Ram royalty, only out-ranked by the even more massively steroidal 3500 in the heavy-hauling hierarchy.

And serious haulage is what it’s all about with 79 per cent of buyers citing towing as a major consideration in their purchase, and the test truck was equipped to drag around no less than 10,320 kilograms. Those buyers, incidentally, are 90 per cent male and 50 per cent of heavy-duty models are purchased for work, although the Ram folk claim 100 per cent of them do double duty as fun and family vehicles.

This – or one of its Ford or GM heavy-duty rivals – is the kind of truck you want to be at the wheel of when you’re towing an enclosed trailer full of race-car, tires, tools and gas to some distant track. Not, on the other hand, when you’re trying to squeeze into a mall-sized parking spot.

It’s all very well to talk about driving one of these things for fun, but in reality it isn’t, at least for someone used to manoeuvring something smaller. Real pickup-driving guys and gals probably don’t notice – they just drive – but I’ll admit to finding it a tad intimidating.

More confidence would naturally come with additional time behind the wheel, but initially driving in traffic your awareness of how much space you’re occupying and how that reduces the distance between you and other road users is definitely at a much heightened level.

The test truck topped a lineup that starts with the $31,395 2500 ST and moves up through SLT, Outdoorsman, Lone Star, Big Horn, Power Wagon and Laramie to the $58,845 Laramie Longhorn Crew Cab 4×4.

From across a parking lot, the Ram 2500 doesn’t look much different from a mere Ram 1500 – although the 17-inch alloy wheels actually look a little undersized – but the scale seems to expand until it fills your visual horizon by the time you’re reaching up for the door handle.

Styling is mainly differentiated from Ram 1500s by a bigger grille and higher hood line, and a small-condo-sized four-door Crew Cab roofline that tops out at 1,973 mm, or about the same as a six-foot cowboy wearing a Stetson. Overall length is 6,030 mm or just a tad less than 20 feet, and width a just within the street legal width limit at 2,009 mm. A Texas-tall cowboy, without his hat, could stretch out lengthwise in the box out back.

But he’d be much happier and feel more at home in the leathery-luxury found inside where just about everything on the Ram family comfort and convenience feature list can be found, including Parkview camera and rear sensors, heated seats all round (ventilated and power adjustable up front), power sliding rear window, power pedals, remote start, touch screen display and navigation, plus a high-end audio system and optional rear-seat video system.

All the trappings of a luxury car or sport-ute, but swathed in home-on-the-range, high-grade cowhide. In fact, to quote the label, genuine full-grain Natura Plus leather, each hide bringing unique markings and assuring the owner he has purchased a vehicle that employs the same hand-crafted materials as a horseman’s saddle, and that will age to a one-of-a-kind appearance.

This interior must be the “glory” Ram commercials tout, but the “guts” are definitely found under the hood.

That’s where, for an extra $9,345, you can replace the standard 5.7-litre, 383-hp/400-lb-ft Hemi V-8 with 6.7 litres of Cummins inline-six-cylinder High Output Turbo Diesel. This was boosted to its current output of 350 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque for 2012 in response to a three-way pulling-power arms race with Ford and General Motors. Bragging rights are taken seriously in this segment.

This slogging monster makes its full power at just 3,000 rpm and all of that prodigious torque is available from 1,500 rpm to 2,800 rpm, fed to the wheels through an optional, $1,900 six-speed automatic and a rugged four-wheel-drive system.

This latest generation of Cummins diesels is said to be 50 per cent quieter as well as more emission-efficient and fuel-efficient, although the latter numbers are still likely rather daunting – no ratings are published for heavy-duty trucks. It’s also expected to be long-lived with (best case scenario, of course) an anticipated mileage of 560,000 km before a major overhaul is required.

It may not rev much, but this big six sure pulls, accelerating this massive vehicle with surprising rapidity. But the Hemi V-8 would likely make a better choice for those who drive a Ram 2500 because they want to, while the diesel would obviously be the powerplant for those who drive one because they need to.

Dodge adds new luxury Laramie Limited spec to Ram pickup line

2012 Dodge Ram Laramie Limited Dodge adds new luxury Laramie Limited spec to Ram pickup line

Dodge is upping the ante with their Ram Truck pickup lineup by adding a new luxury model: the Ram Laramie Limited.

“The Ram Truck brand’s greatest strengths are our commitment to listen to customers and to understand what motivates them,” said Fred Diaz, President and CEO, Ram Truck Brand. “We’ve successfully added Ram truck models designed for outdoorsmen, tradesmen, first-time buyers and ranchers. Laramie Limited is designed to meet the high expectations of affluent pickup truck buyers looking to combine capability with elegance.”

The Ram Laramie Limited comes with many premium features such as an interior filled with plenty of leather, piano-gloss black interior trim and much more. On the outside, the new Ram Laramie Limited adopts a “street truck” look, versus the traditional workhorse looks of the standard Ram—think Ford F150 Platinum and King Ranch editions.

The Ram Laramie Limited will be available in 1500 (1/2 ton), 2500 HD (3/4 ton), and 3500 HD single- and dual-rear-wheel (1-ton) form. They can also be found with Crew Cab and Mega Cab configurations, on both short- and long-wheel base models.

Prices have yet to be announced, but Chrysler said that the Ram Laramie Limited will launch in the second quarter of 2012.

Dodge Ram Laramie Longhorn named Truck of Texas

The Dodge Ram Laramie Longhorn edition was named as the TRUCK OF TEXAS after an extensive weekend of competition in the San Antonio – Bulverde area. The Laramie Longhorn follows in the footsteps on many great vehicles receiving the award in the 20-year history of the Texas Auto Writers Association.

Other top awards went to the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Nissan Juke, and Ford’s MyTouch system. Vehicles were arranged by categories, such as heavy-duty trucks, compact crossovers, or luxury SUV’s. Competition was intense, with each manufacturer bringing their best of the best. Workers were present all day, wiping the dirt and dust off. Individual winners were named for each category.

Almost 40 automotive journalists gathered for a long weekend of testing and evaluating approximately 60 trucks, SUV’s, and CUV’s in off-road and on-road areas. The majority of driving took place at the historic Knibbe Ranch near Canyon Lake. The test drive route took the journalists up and over steep rocky areas in the famed Texas Hill Country, through small ranch creeks, and along the gravel riverbed edge of the Guadalupe River. There were a few mishaps, including some cut tires on the sharp rocks and at least one vehicle bogging down in the swift-flowing waters of the Guadalupe.

Mike Herzing, current President of the Texas Auto Writers, commented, “This years’ Rodeo was filled with excitement, surprises, and extraordinary emphasis on products. Manufacturers all represented themselves with great vehicles and knowledgeable people.” Manufacturer representatives were more numerous than the journalists due to the coveted awards. The awards translate into more sales and more sales translate into more money for the car companies.

Public Relations representatives, engineers, designers, planners, and even executives were present to attempt influence in the evaluation and voting process. Mark Fields, President of the Americas for Ford and Fred Diaz, President of Ram Division for Dodge was both present, as were other high-ranking individuals. Although there were no overt attempts to “buy votes”, there were plenty of ball caps, tee-shirts, key chains, and other small items handed out to the voting journalists.

The trophies, custom-made belt buckles, and other awards will be presented at a special banquet to be held November 12, 2010 at Space Center Houston.

The Truck of Texas is the Dodge Ram Laramie Longhorn. The Laramie Longhorn had been unveiled at the State Fair of Texas in late September and is classified as a Full-Size Luxury pickup.

The SUV of Texas is the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Jeep’s popular SUV has had significant changes made to their newest model. The Jeep Grand Cherokee was introduced several months prior to the Rodeo and has had significant mention in the automotive press.

The CUV of Texas is the Nissan Juke, recently unveiled and new on the market. This small Crossover is based on a car platform but performs like a small SUV.

The Truck Line of Texas is Ford Motor Company, maintaining its significant emphasis on providing a wide variety of products for the buying public. The Most Outstanding Feature award also went to Ford Motor Company for its new MyFordTouch. MyFordTouch is an extension of the popular SYNC and uses voice interaction with controls for the radio, climate control, navigation, and more.

Can-do Ram pickup will boost your popularity

Friends will call on the trusty diesel with opulent trim

3705878 Can do Ram pickup will boost your popularity

Gaining access to a truck while living in a city is like striking gold. Everyone is excited for you, but everyone also wants a portion of the fortune.

I noticed that I became significantly more popular when word got out that a 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins Crew Cab Laramie Edition truck was in my driveway. That’s not to say my ranking on the popularity scale is low, but additional points are always welcome. My phone rang often with people saying, “So, I heard you have a truck. I was wondering if you could help me … .” My answer was always yes — why not put a truck of this size to the test and help others along the way? It was my pleasure.

That said, the 2500′s size is both a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing because the Crew Cab configuration is spacious and comfortable. Plus, there are some excellent features inside like the optional 6.5-inch touch screen GPS navigation system; a leather-wrapped, heated steering wheel with mounted audio controls; a great stereo system and more.

Addi t iona l ly, t hr e e average-sized adults fit in the rear seats, with ample head-and legroom. Also a boon is the long bed, which is great for hauling larger items such as ladders, plywood and furniture.

But add the Crew Cab to the long bed for a total length of 6.6 metres, and the curse comes into play, especially in the city. When driving the full-sized pickup, the streets seem crowded and narrow, and finding a parking spot can be difficult.

The Ram 2500 is relatively quiet, whether driving around in stop-and-go traffic or cruising on the highway. The sound-deadening materials used to muffle the noise from the optional 6.7-litre Cummins Turbo Diesel engine did a bang-up job. The 350-horsepower truck also runs relatively quietly when you are standing outside the vehicle.

Nor is it sooty and fumy like diesel engines of old. In fact, this truck, with up to 650 pound-feet of torque, is the only heavy-duty diesel pickup on the market that does not require a diesel exhaust fluid, such as a urea-based additive, to meet Canadian emissions standards.

Having experienced Dodge products such as the Caliber, Avenger and Journey, I didn’t expect much of the Ram’s interior. The textures that drape the dashes of those vehicles, even on the top-of-the-line models, are typically unflattering. However, when I hoisted myself into the Ram’s newly redesigned cabin, I was floored. I almost didn’t believe my eyes. Soft-touch materials? Wood-grain trim? Contrasting stitching and colours? It couldn’t be.

Granted, it was the top-of-the-line Laramie trim, but the interior was better than I expected. One less impressive feature of the cabin — the only unimpressive feature, in fact — was the Uconnect hands-free phone system. It cut out on me mid-conversation numerous times, and I wasn’t thrilled. I was willing to turn a blind eye the first couple of times it happened, but it didn’t stop. I tried to blame my phone, but this problem has never occurred with any other vehicle’s hands-free system. Hopefully, this was an isolated case.

All my good deeds of helping others out didn’t go unnoticed. My fuel bill was the evidence. Even when linked with the efficient six-speed automatic transmission, the Turbo Diesel engine drank its fair share of fuel, and then some.

This particular Ram came equipped with the 4×4 system to give it the “go anywhere it can fit” option. There was also a built-in trailer brake controller, a two-inch receiver hitch with four-and seven-pin trailer connectors, and an exhaust brake, making it an extremely convenient hauler.

With all the extras, the MSRP of this Ram came to $70,165, including destination. Stripped down, the Ram 2500 HD Laramie 4×4 trim with the 6.7L engine is $52,395.

Overall, the 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 4×4 Laramie can be commended for its well-manicured interior, great ride quality and friend-making abilities. And if friend-making is a priority for you but a truck isn’t, might I suggest the Challenger.

Dodge Ram 2500 HD Laramie Mega Cab 4×4 Diesel Manual – Quick Test

What Is It?

A big brown truck with a diesel engine and a manual transmission—one that doesn’t say “UPS” on the side. The Ram is the only full-size pickup still offered with a stick; the row-it-yourself six-speed can be had only on 2500 and 3500 models powered by the Cummins diesel. This particular truck is very similar to our long-term Ram 2500, and, with the stick and its requisite front bench seat, is eerily similar to the long-termer that should have been, according to one staff member (read: the author).

How Does It Drive?

It’s actually a ton—well, closer to four tons—of fun. Turbo lag is more noticeable as a result of the slower shifts—quickly throwing a lever that long is tricky—which made the experience extra trucky and involving. While it’s not exactly a Ram SRT10, five minutes in this thing had a smile plastered across the mug of everybody who drove it.

save the manuals button 80x80 Dodge Ram 2500 HD Laramie Mega Cab 4x4 Diesel Manual Quick Test

The short, creeper first gear is useless in most situations, but the huge torque (650 lb-ft) allows easy starts from second, manageable starts from third, and even possible starts from fourth. We did, however, find times to use gear one, such as when towing (which this thing does with the same ease as our autobox long-termer, albeit with a tad more interaction) and in parade duty. You might think that a manual would be the last choice for such a low-speed job, especially during the stop-and-go-and-stop-some-more Woodward Dream Cruise. But we were hauling a rather large sandwich board emblazoned with the “Save the Manuals!” logo, so it would have been a tad hypocritical to promote the cause with a slushbox pickup. Idle in first gear was good for about 3 mph with no pedal intervention, and second allowed the Ram to chug along at a blistering 6-ish. The truck (and its somewhat cryptic signage) got plenty of attention; when one carload of teens asked for proof that it was in fact a manual, a quick burnout may have been performed. So that’s another use for first gear.

How Does It Stack Up?

As the only manual full-sizer, it’s the king of the hill by default. Plus, this one’s brown. Compared to our automatized Ram, though, it’s kind of, er, slower. The 0-to-60-mph jog takes 9.6 seconds, an extra 1.2 over the auto truck. Blame the frequent shifting and increased turbo lag—you trade a little bit of performance for ultimate gear control. The diesel Ram may not offer the gonzo torque numbers of the Ford and GM heavy duties, but neither can match this truck’s fun factor. Of course, for those who are towing or hauling often—i.e. most HD-pickup buyers—the automatic is a lot easier to manage.

What’s the Cost?

A totally stripped, two-wheel-drive 2500 with a regular cab and the diesel starts at $34,610; stepping up to a 4×4 Laramie Mega Cab that’s mechanically identical to this one will run at least $50,545. Our tester added $5K in options, including rear-seat entertainment, chrome side steps, a rearview cam, a sunroof, a spray-in bedliner, a trailer-brake controller, and a nav system. Steep, yes, but you’re saving $1575 by opting for three pedals versus two. Incidentally, the brown pearl paint is a no-cost option, and grants membership in the Brown-Car Appreciation Society, so you have no excuse for skipping it.

Dodge Ram done right 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 4X4

A Ram with a Cummins Turbo Diesel isn’t uncommon in Saskatchewan and the distinctive Ram grille is one that has been in just about everyone’s rear view mirror.

Dodge decided that when they re-did the Ram, those two items would remain. They were the main identifiers of the brand, so to speak.

The new body looks similar to the previous generation, but is subtly different. Proportions on the front grille and in the fender as they come out from the hood are just a bit better balanced than before. The “RAM Tough” look is still there, but with a more mature, confident stance.

Crew Cab is also new for 2010. We, as the public, may have referred to the four-door versions as crew cabs, but Ram had other names for them in the past like Quad Cab and Mega Cab. Let me assure you that the rear doors are still large and open wide. With two large doors and an eight-foot box, there is enough space on any one side of the truck to make any graphics company drool with the thought of decaling it up for someone’s company.

As a 4×4, the chrome side steps that Ram considers an option should be standard equipment. There is no way to clean bugs off the front window or get in the truck without using these side rails. If you had to, you could probably grab the handle on the door post and lift yourself in, but that would limit the use of the truck to work only and in Laramie Trim, this is much too nice a truck just to show it off at the job site.

The outside has just the right amount of chrome to give it a dressed-up look and the wheels are shiny enough to make them stand out so the truck looks awesome. Even better is the fact that all surfaces are sealed so if you start off life with a good clean and wax, a quick trip to the car wash will get the mud, bugs and grit off without marking up a thing.

In the back bed, my Ram came with a bed liner (again, optional at extra cost) complete with caps on the sides and tailgate to prevent damage.

I gave the liner a good work out, cleaning Castle Renny out and making several trips to recycling and then on to the dump. My two complaints about the bed and liner can be solved easily, but I never took the time.

Complaint No. 1 was that the stake holes in the bed are covered off by the liner so that I couldn’t use them to tie off the load before heading out. Complaint No. 2 is that the hoops welded into the truck bed were down low within a couple of centimetres of the bed floor. Unless I tied off my securing lines before loading, these were useless for securing my loads too. If I had a couple of dirt bikes or such in the back, these hooks would have been ideally located, so it isn’t all one way for use.

My only other problem with the Ram was that I couldn’t work the Cummins hard enough to know if I had all 300 horsepower and 650 lb./ft. of torque on line. Coming off a traffic light or getting up to highway speed being loaded or empty didn’t seem to make a difference. The truck seems a bit slow off the start as the turbo spools up, but I know that Ram engineers did that on purpose to prevent the destruction of the new six-speed automatic and other drive-line components when fully loaded.

The Cummins diesel package rates an article all by itself, but the abridged version is that it is the first medium-duty diesel to come with an engine exhaust brake as standard equipment. Add to the fact the engine meets all emissions standards while providing improved fuel economy (the new six-speed automatic helps out) and the package is well worth the $9,200 price tag that Ram puts on it.

Getting back into the truck after emptying it out was like getting onto a masseuse’s table. My aches and pains disappeared. My Ram had heated (not tested) and cooled (used every time I got in) front bucket seats. Between using the power adjusters to get comfortable and the large power towing package mirrors on the outside, driving was like being in one giant armchair. The wide centre console/portable office space still has a couple of cup holders that seem to be able to hold just about any size of Tim’s coffee you buy.

If hauling people as well as cargo is in your plans, the rear seat is comfortable for three full-sized adults. They may not call it a “Mega Cab” any more but I’m sure kids could hold their whole birthday party in the back and have room left over.

Ram got this truck right. The interior is well thought out, the electronics provide useful information and the option packages are well organized.

If you are looking for a new medium duty 2500/3500 series truck, the new Ram is a must-drive.
