Chrysler recalls Dodge, Ram, Chrysler models over fire risk
Chrysler Group is planning a recall of various 2010 and 2011 model year vehicles from their Dodge, Ram and Chrysler brands over a possible power steering leak that could lead to an engine bay fire. In the affected cars, trucks and crossovers, a crimped connection in one of the high pressure power steering lines could separate; causing power steering fluid to spray into the engine bay potentially causing a fire.
This Chrysler recall affects 26,397 vehicles with roughly 19,000 of them being 2010 model year versions of the Chrysler Sebring, Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Avenger and Dodge Journey built during August 2010. Also, 7,300 2011 Ram 1500 models built in July and August 2010 are affected by the same possible situation.
Chrysler points out that there have been no reported accidents, fires, or injuries stemming from this new Dodge, Ram and Chrysler recall and that this action is voluntary, based on testing done by the supplier of the steering line in question.
This new Chrysler recall stems from a supplier change
The power steering line responsible for this new Chrysler recall is produced by YH America South Carolina LLC and during testing at YH in July, there were two instances where the hose separated from the crimped metal hose fitting. Evidently, due to a Dupont material plant closing, new materials were used for the production of these power steering lines – which is believed to be the cause of the separation.
Not only will the impact of this Chrysler recall potentially cause a fire, if the vehicle is being driven when the hose fails it could cause extremely difficult driving conditions. Without the proper fluid flow the power steering would fail, making it very difficult to steer the vehicle – especially at lower speeds.
The owners of the 26,000 recalled Chrysler products can expect a letter in the mail over the next few weeks instructing them to return to their friendly neighborhood Chrysler Group dealership for a free replacement of the power steering line in question.
